This is the first book in the DI John Marco series although a prequel novella is now available.

I read the novella first, and a trait I noticed in it was sadly repeated at great length in this novel. Although DI Marco does a lot of running around not a lot actually happens for chapters at a time. None of the witnesses want to cooperate and end up repeating the same lines each time they're interviewed. The book was tedious to read and I felt unable to connect with Marco who is as flawed in his way as Ian Drake, the protagonist of the other series of Steven Puleston's books. Detective Marco is a very flawed individual, but not an interesting flawed one that I really want to get to know as he is so lacking in so many human traits. The fact that he is a recovering alcoholic, a smoker, and too wrapped up in his job to pay attention to his girlfriend, or his SON are traits also that are very similar to Puleston other detective, Inspector Drake.

The ending was somewhat deux et machina and allowed DI Marco to solve the case but not without tampering with a witness.

Overall there was little to like about this novel and even less to recommend it. I am somewhat disappointed because Puleston's Inspector Drake series are so much better.

Speechless Inspector Marco Volume 1 Stephen Puleston 9781532734205 Books Reviews

To really like a book, you have to like the main character. Since Puleston writes Marco in the first person, there aren't other options. As I read the book, and after finishing it, I asked myself, "What's there to like about detective Marco?" The few likeable qualities weren't enough to tip the balance amidst the many flaws. I didn't like Marco, and therefore, I enjoyed the book very little.

*** Spoiler ***

What really turned me off to Marco was his treatment of women. We learn that he had been married once, but she figures into the book only as the mother of his son. His girlfriend is Trish, but we see little connection between them. Then there is Dagmara, the eastern European who Marco sleeps with--twice--before she dies. I found myself predicting the eventual sex between Marco and Dagmara, and resenting him for not being faithful to Trish. Marco's faithlesness became the trait that made me never want to read a novel from this author again.
The plot was fine but the characters were weakly defined. The writing style seemed either to be an American's attempt at a British mystery or a Brit's imitation of a stereotypical American mystery, oddly plopped down in Wales. The composition quality was not comparable to Deborah Crombie or Colin Dexter, for example. In fairness, this was the first Puleston book I have read so I may take a chance on another one day if it is free or inexpensive.
The main police characters in this book so very believable. The writing style easy to read and the storyline exciting enough not to be able to put this down for too long a periods. As it got to the denouement I couldn't put it down at all. I would recommend this book and author if you are into crime and mystery thrillers. This is the first of his books I have read, I have now purchased two of his other police dramas featuring Inspector Drake. I hope I find this just as good. I would have purchased another Marco book but it obviously hasn't been written yet but I certainly will when it is finished. So I am looking forward to the same enjoyment with Drake as I had with Marco.
When Detective Inspector John Marco of the Wales Police Service in Cardiff gets an early morning call about a body found in the river, he thinks it’s a routine drowning. But, when it’s discovered that the body has had its tongue removed, he realizes that it’s anything but routine. When another body is found with the tongue removed, Marco finds himself up to his hips in a case involving the close-mouthed and thoroughly intimidated Polish community in Cardiff, prostitution and human trafficking.
Speechless by Stephen Puleston is a riveting crime story that takes the reader from the seamy underworld of Cardiff’s working class neighborhoods to the posh mansions of the city’s upper crust, and then to the dangerous back streets of Warsaw, as Marco chases a merciless criminal whose trademark is removing the tongues of his victims. At the same time, he has to navigate the perilous bureaucratic waters of his own department and his own personal demons.
Crime drama at its best, with some of the strongest character development I’ve seen in the genre since Robert B. Parker’s Spenser novels.
This is the first book in the Detective Inspector John Marco series, but it’s the second time I’ve encountered the character. While a novel in another series by the same author, the Detective Inspector Drake mystery series, I witnessed an encounter between the two policemen. Both men serve in the Welsh Police Service, Drake in the picturesque north and Marco in the more industrialized south. Neither man was impressed with the other. DI Drake may not have been impressed by DI Marco, but I was.

DI Marco, who acts as his own narrator, is an edgier character, a bit more fiery, a little less refined. He’s not above head-butting an obnoxious cousin at a family gathering or ruffling the feathers of a self-important retired Wing Commander in the posher district of Cardiff. That he’s Italian may explain part of it, but he also hasn’t had any alcohol in over a year.

When a worker from Cardiff’s Polish community is found floating in the bay, his tongue cut out, it propels Marco into a dangerous investigation involving human trafficking, prostitution, and blackmail. He walks a path beset with dangers, including thugs, well-heeled criminals and assassins with paramilitary training, not to mention self-serving politicians, the entitled elite, and his own police bureaucracy.

The writing is crisp, the setting gritty, and the plotting complex. It was a very enjoyable introduction to the series, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book.
